Abstract

An exploration of Sumatran Begonia was conducted to estimate population and habitat preferences of Begonia leuserensis Hughes in their natural habitat in Mount Ketambe, Mount Leuser National Park, Aceh. Morphological descriptions of B. leuserensis and other Begonia species found in the area were carried out to complete the existing morphological descriptions. Population estimation of B. leuserensis was carried out using 20 sample plots with a size of 10 m x 10 m in two different locations. Environmental parameters, including temperature, air humidity, soil pH, soil moisture and light intensity were measured in each sample plot. Four species of Begonia were found in Mount Ketambe, namely Begonia flexula, B. laruei and B. verecunda which are classified as a lowland Begonia, while B.leuserensis is distributed at altitude of 850-1,250 m asl. Population study showed that the abundance of B.leuserensis in the area reached 210 individuals / ha. In general, the temperature, pH and light intensity were the most influential factors in the twenty sample plots, in addition to the altitude which limits the distribution of B. leuserensis in the submontane zone of Mount Ketambe.
